This is the Great American Story and a classic fairytale all rolled into one. Overnight success. A decade as the star of Broadway’s Golden Age. And then, a second decade of silence, as mysterious as the first was celebrated. When she emerged from her exile, it was as a cabaret and concert artist. Alistair McCauley says it best— “Barbara Cook is the greatest singer in the world.” If we were only talking about her extraordinary voice and technique, that would be enough. But artistry is always about more. As Ms. Cook has said, "If you can get to the point where you are ready to use every joy, every death, every lover who left you... if you're willing to explore that within the song, you cannot be wrong." Barbara Cook has been spectacularly right for over 60 years. This concert celebrates both her 85th birthday and Alverno College’s 125th Anniversary. This night will live with you for a very long time.
